What it is

  • A tooth that has darkened compared with its neighbours
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum near one tooth

  • Pain when biting down on one particular tooth

What happens at your appointment

  1. Examination and digital X-ray

We take a digital RVG X-ray to see the root and the extent of infection. You see the image on screen and we explain what it shows.

  2. Local anaesthetic

The tooth and surrounding gum are numbed. We wait until the area is fully numb before starting — this is the step that makes the procedure comfortable.

  3. Cleaning the canals

The infected pulp is removed and the canals are shaped and disinfected using rotary instruments, which is faster and gentler than hand filing.

  4. Filling and sealing

The canals are filled with an inert material and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter.

  5. Crown

A treated tooth is more brittle, so a crown is usually advised to protect it. We will quote this separately and you can decide.

Recovery
You can eat normally the same day once the numbness wears off. Mild tenderness for 2–3 days is normal.

Root canal or extraction?

Removing the tooth costs less on the day: ₹800 for a simple extraction and ₹1,500 for a complicated one. The gap it leaves is usually filled later, with an implant (₹40,000, crown separate), a bridge or a denture. Left empty, the neighbouring teeth can drift and tilt into the gap over time.

Whether a tooth can be kept depends on what the examination and X-ray show: how much tooth is left above the gum, the bone around the root, and whether the root is cracked. When both options are open, we explain each one with its price and you decide.

Common questions — Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Is a root canal painful?

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Most patients report the appointment was easier than the toothache that brought them in. Mild tenderness for two to three days afterwards is normal and responds to ordinary painkillers.

How much does a root canal cost in Lucknow?

At Area Dental Clinic, ₹2,500 for a single-root front tooth and ₹3,500 for a multi-root molar. Re-treatment of a previously treated tooth is ₹3,500. A crown afterwards is priced separately, from ₹3,000. Our full rate list is published on this site.

How much does a root canal with a crown cost?

At Area Dental Clinic, a front tooth with a PFM crown comes to ₹5,500 and a molar with a PFM crown to ₹6,500. With a metal-free zirconia crown, a molar comes to ₹10,500. Whether a crown is needed is decided after the examination.

How many visits does a root canal take?

Usually one or two visits of 45 to 60 minutes. Straightforward cases are often completed in a single sitting. Teeth with active infection or swelling may need an extra visit so the infection can settle before sealing.

Do I really need a crown after a root canal?

For back teeth, yes in most cases — a treated tooth loses moisture and becomes brittle, and chewing forces can crack it. Front teeth with small access cavities can sometimes be restored with a filling instead. We will tell you which applies to your tooth.

How long does a root canal treated tooth last?

A properly treated and crowned tooth can last many years and often for life. Longevity depends on the crown fitting well, the tooth being kept clean, and avoiding chewing very hard objects on it.

Can I go to work after a root canal?

Yes. There is no sedation involved, so you can drive and return to work the same day. Wait until the numbness fully wears off before eating so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.

What happens if I delay a root canal?

An infected pulp does not heal by itself. Waiting can let the infection reach the bone around the root and form an abscess, and the longer decay continues, the less tooth is left to restore, which can turn a tooth that could have been saved into an extraction. Pain that stops on its own often means the nerve has died, not that the problem has gone.
