What it is

RVG is digital intraoral radiography. A small sensor replaces film, so the image is instant, can be magnified and adjusted on screen, and uses a fraction of the radiation. Oral radiology is a particular focus of this clinic.

Signs you may need this

  • Toothache where the cause is not visible on examination
  • Assessment before a root canal, implant or extraction
  • Checking a wisdom tooth's angle and roots
  • Suspected decay between teeth
  • Reviewing bone level in gum disease

What happens at your appointment

  1. Sensor placement

A small sensor is positioned next to the tooth. It takes a few seconds and is not uncomfortable for most people.

  2. Exposure

A brief, low-dose exposure with a lead apron. The image appears immediately on screen.

  3. Reviewing it with you

We turn the screen towards you and show you what we are looking at. You should never be told what an X-ray shows without seeing it.

Recovery
None.

Common questions — Digital Dental X-Ray (RVG)

Is a dental X-ray safe?

A digital RVG dental X-ray delivers a very small radiation dose — far lower than conventional dental film and a tiny fraction of natural annual background exposure. We use a lead apron and only take images that will change the treatment decision.

Can I get an X-ray during pregnancy?

Elective dental X-rays are usually deferred, particularly in the first trimester. If there is an active infection or severe pain, a shielded single RVG may be justified because untreated infection carries its own risk. Tell us you are pregnant and we will decide together.

Can I take my X-ray with me?

Yes. Digital images can be shared with you or a specialist you are being referred to. Ask at reception and we will provide it.
