What it is

Children's dentistry focuses on preventing decay in milk teeth and guiding the adult teeth in. Milk teeth matter — they hold space for the permanent teeth, and losing them early causes crowding later.

Signs you may need this

  • Brown or black spots on a child's teeth
  • A child complaining of toothache or avoiding cold food
  • A milk tooth that is loose and painful, or not falling out
  • An adult tooth coming in behind a milk tooth
  • Thumb sucking past age four
  • Your child has never had a dental check-up

What happens at your appointment

  1. A visit with no treatment

For a first appointment we often do nothing but look, count teeth and let the child sit in the chair. A child who is not frightened is a child who will come back.

  2. Show, tell, do

Every instrument is shown and explained in words the child understands before it is used. Nothing happens by surprise.

  3. Treatment in short blocks

Children's attention has limits. We work in short spells and stop when asked, which builds trust for the next visit.

  4. Parent briefing

We show you exactly where your child is missing when brushing, and how much of the diet issue is hidden sugar rather than sweets.

Recovery
Depends on treatment. Children generally recover faster than adults.

Common questions — Children's Dentistry

Do milk teeth with cavities need treating if they will fall out anyway?

Yes. A decayed milk tooth can cause pain, infection and damage to the developing adult tooth underneath, and losing it early lets neighbouring teeth drift into the space, causing crowding. Treating a milk tooth is not wasted effort.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

By around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. The first visit is mainly to check development and advise on brushing and feeding — not to treat anything. Early familiarity prevents the fear that makes later treatment difficult.

My child is terrified of the dentist. What do you do differently?

We book a longer slot, do no treatment at the first visit, and let the child explore the chair and instruments at their own pace. Please avoid saying 'it won't hurt' beforehand — it plants the idea. Telling them they are going to meet the tooth doctor for a look works better.
